The Poem

The night, my lover

The night, my lover

The night, my lover

patient, discreet, thoughtful

I await his footsteps each sundown

With a sprig of green words

We waste no time in inanities

But lie in each others arms

Tell each other stories

Ask and answer questions

Make up and solve riddles

He reveals worlds

I never knew existed

Introduces people I almost forget

Brings me snatches of childhood song

Sometimes he surprises me

With the whisper of rain,

The smell of wet earth

He streaks my body with lightning

As thunder growls in his throat

And when we lie, all passion spent

The window panes lighten, birds begin to sing

He slips away, gathering armfuls of shadows

I await his footsteps each sundown

With a sprig of green words

The night, my lover.
